Keyless Entry Not Working
Keyless Entry Remote Not Working? Here's What to Do (NZ Guide)
Keyless entry remotes (or key fobs) make locking and unlocking your car easy — until they stop working. If your remote isn’t responding, don’t panic. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you fix it fast, with advice specific to New Zealand drivers.
π 1. Your Remote Battery Is Flat
This is the most common reason. If your remote no longer lights up or triggers the car, the battery is likely flat.
- Most remotes use CR2032 or CR2025 batteries (available at supermarkets, Bunnings, & Mitre 10)
- Be sure to install the battery the right way up
- If unsure, ask a locksmith or visit our team in Hamilton
π‘ Tip: Many fobs have a backup key hidden inside — use this to unlock your door manually.
π 2. It Might Need Reprogramming
Sometimes the remote loses its pairing with the car, especially after a flat battery or electrical work.
- Check your owner's manual for re-sync steps
π‘ 3. There’s Signal Interference
Strong radio frequencies can block the signal between your remote and vehicle.
- Move away from areas like construction sites, airports, or radio towers
- Try holding the remote closer to the driver’s door handle
π§ 4. The Remote or Car Receiver Is Faulty
If you’ve replaced the battery and tried reprogramming, the issue could be with the receiver or circuit board.
- Try a spare remote if you have one
- Or visit an auto electrician for diagnostics
π 5. Emergency Unlock Tips
If you're locked out:
- Use the hidden manual key from your fob
- Some push-start vehicles can be started by holding the fob near the start button
Pro Tip: Always have a spare key. If you don’t have one, now’s the time to get it made.
