Keyless Entry Remote Not Working? NZ Troubleshooting Guide (2026)
Keyless entry remotes make locking and unlocking your car quick and convenient, until they suddenly stop working. If your key fob has stopped responding, there are a few common issues you can check before assuming the worst.
This guide explains the most likely reasons your keyless entry remote is not working, the simple fixes you can try, and when it is time to get expert help.
1. The Remote Battery May Be Flat
A flat battery is the most common reason a keyless entry remote stops working. If the remote no longer lights up, responds inconsistently, or stops unlocking the car altogether, the battery is often the first thing to check.
- Most key fobs use CR2032 or CR2025 batteries
- These are usually available from supermarkets, Bunnings and Mitre 10
- Make sure the new battery is fitted the correct way around
Tip: Many key fobs include a hidden manual key inside, which can be used to unlock the driver’s door if the battery is flat.
2. The Key Fob May Need Reprogramming
Sometimes the remote can lose its pairing with the vehicle. This may happen after a flat battery, electrical work, or long periods without use.
- Check your owner’s manual for re-sync instructions
- Some vehicles require a simple reset sequence
- Others may need a locksmith, dealer, or auto electrician to reprogram the fob
If you have a spare remote, test that as well. If the spare works and the main key does not, the issue is more likely with the fob than the car.
3. Signal Interference Could Be Blocking the Remote
In some cases, the remote itself is fine, but outside interference is disrupting the signal.
- Move away from construction sites, airports, radio towers, or heavy electronic equipment
- Try holding the remote closer to the driver’s door handle
- If the car has push-button start, try placing the fob near the start button
This is usually a temporary issue, but it can make the problem seem more serious than it really is.
4. The Remote or Vehicle Receiver May Be Faulty
If you have replaced the battery and the remote still does not work, there could be a fault with the remote’s internal circuit board or the vehicle’s receiver.
- Try a spare key if you have one
- Check whether the problem happens all the time or only sometimes
- If both remotes fail, the issue may be with the car rather than the key
At that stage, it is usually best to speak with an auto electrician, locksmith, or qualified technician.
5. Emergency Unlock and Start Tips
If you are locked out or your keyless entry will not respond, there are still a few things you can do.
- Use the hidden manual key inside the fob to unlock the door
- On some push-start vehicles, hold the fob close to the start button when starting the car
- Keep a spare key in a safe place if possible
Having a second key can save a lot of time and stress if your main remote stops working unexpectedly.
6. Do Not Forget to Check the Vehicle Battery
If your remote works only some of the time, the issue may not be the key fob at all. A weak vehicle battery can sometimes affect the car’s ability to recognise the remote signal consistently.
If you are noticing other signs such as slow starting, dim lights, or electrical issues, it may be worth having the vehicle battery checked as well.
